OTD: First goal for Maxi Rodriguez as Liverpool run riot

On this day (April 25) 2010, Argentine forward Maxi Rodriguez scored his first goal for the Reds as Liverpool ran riot at Turf Moor.

Rafa Benitez kept faith in Rodriguez despite struggling to make an impact since his arrival from Atletico Madrid three months earlier and was rewarded with the third goal on the afternoon following a brace from captain Steven Gerrard.

The rout was finished off when Ryan Babel added a fourth late on to complete a resounding 4-0 victory for the Europe chasing visitors.

A Liverpool side also boasted a rare start for injury-ravaged midfielder Alberto Aquilani , one of just nine Premier League starts the Italian made during his ill-fated Anfield spell.

There was also a rare outing for attacking midfielder Dani Pacheco as the Spaniard replaced Gerrard with just 10 minutes remaining – one of 17 first-team outings for the now UD Logroñés ace.

Whilst the comfortably earned three points moved the Reds into seventh with two fixtures remaining, Benitez’s side transpired to pick up just one point from their final two matches to miss out on Europe for the following campaign.

Fast forward to the present day and Jurgen Klopp’s men are having similar problems getting to grips with European qualification, dropping four points from winning positions this week alone.

matchday.
