Ian Wright dumbfounded by criticism of Liverpool’s £90m winger

Despite plenty of setbacks throughout the campaign, Liverpool finished with a flourish in the Premier League.

At one point, it seemed as though the Reds were set to battle it our for Europa League football.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s men fought back to finish third and secure a place in next seasons Champions League.

Despite the club’s miraculous fight back and their 2-0 win on the final day against Crystal Palace, one player has come under fire.

Sadio Mané scored a brace against Palace to secure Champions League football for the club.

Even though the Senegalese winger played a huge role, he has come under criticism for his performances this season.

Something that BBC pundit Ian Wright is rather confused by.

Speaking to Ringer FC (via The Metro), Wright revealed his confusion over the criticism that Mané received last season.

“I was reading stuff where fans were having a go at Mane, I couldn’t believe it, especially when you look at the amount of time it took [Roberto] Firmino to get going… For him to get the stick he was getting, I don’t believe it. I think that must be bots. There’s no way Liverpool fans would be having a go at that man.”.

It is hard to disagree with Wright, especially with how well the winger performed on the final day.

There may have been times this season where Mané missed his chances, but he was consistent overall.

According to WhoScored, Mané averaged a 7.33/10 match rating last season, the highest in the Liverpool squad.

Despite maybe not hitting the goalscoring numbers of last season, the winger still managed 11 goals and 7 assists in the league.

Criticism of Mané is unfair given the overall performance of the squad last campaign.

He may not have been on the same level as previous, but he still played a huge part in Champions League qualification.
