James Pearce delivers transfer update as midfield targets fall

Liverpool have so far been unable to add to the signing of Ibrahima Konate this summer.

Despite a barrage of daily speculation across Europe linking the Reds to numerous different players, Jurgen Klopp is currently overseeing a largely recognisable 34-man squad in Austria.

One of the key positions flagged has been a central midfield arrival, with Renato Sanches, Yves Bissouma, Youri Tielemans and more recently Saul Niguez all linked with replacing Gini Wijnaldum.

Now a report from The Athletic, as cited by James Pearce on Twitter, has outlined that pursuit as well as the possible incomings and departures.

The report all but rules out moves for Sanches, Bissouma and Tielemans, whilst Saul looks set to join Barcelona as part of an exchange for Antoine Griezmann.

Pearce does state that ‘shortlists have been drawn up’ for both midfield and attacking options – singling out PSV forward Donyell Malen as an option on the radar.

In terms of outings, Marko Grujic and Harry Wilson are two players described as ‘destined for permanent transfers’ as the Reds look to raise funds for any incomings.

Although it’s easy to get carried away with possible deals and impatient when transfers don’t come through, Liverpool’s transfer business has rather come as a surprise in recent years.

For instance, the arrival of Diogo Jota last summer seemed to come from left-field – leaving hope that something similar could potentially be on the cards in this window.

One thing is for sure is that the squad needs a minor overhaul, perhaps with Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi also making way for new models.

The report does finish by stating that the next few weeks will begin to shape the window from a Liverpool perspective, so Kopites can hope for some activity in the not too distant future.
