Liverpool have reportedly tried ‘multiple times’ to re-sign £121.5m Brazilian this summer

Liverpool have reportedly been in search of a new midfielder this summer transfer window.

The Reds saw Dutchman Georginio Wijnaldum depart the club in July on a free transfer to French giants PSG.

His departure has left quite the void in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield options due to his importance to the side.

Although Liverpool have a healthy amount of selection in midfield, his quality is difficult to replace.

A number of stars such as Nicolo Barella, Renato Sanches, Youri Tielemans, and Aurelien Tchouameni have been linked.

However, according to Mundo Deportivo (page 3), via Sportslens, the Reds have tried to re-sign Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian midfielder departed the club in 2018 for a club-record fee of £105million as an initial fee.

This doesn’t include the add-ons that the club has received since, taking the total to £121.5million.

Life at Barcelona hasn’t quite gone to plan for Coutinho, with him even being sent out on loan to Bayern Munich in 2019.

The likelihood of the Reds bringing Coutinho back to Anfield is very slim given the club’s stance on transfers.

Not only that, but with Barcelona’s financial issues it wouldn’t take much to twist their arm for his sale.

The club is in disarray and any sum of money would likely be enough to bring Coutinho back to the club.

However, given the reports suggesting the club has probed multiple times to no success, it is unlikely.

Coutinho is no longer the player he once was and he isn’t the type of midfielder that Liverpool needs right now.
