In fact, Jurgen Klopp was keen to keep hold of the 26-year-old, feeling that he would soon prove his worth.
One of the key aspects for this was ensuring he enjoyed a full pre-season at the club, which he did.
His time this summer and preperation with Klopp has clearly paid off with him enjoying a great performance.
Two goals during hte club’s 3-0 win proved he is fully capably of handling the pressure upfront for the Reds.
Although the likes of Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah provide more than enough firepower, Minamino will provide quality in depth.
For the season ahead, this will be incredibly important with Mané and Salah set to depart in the winter.
With the pair at the Africa Cup of Nations, the form of Minamino and DIvock Origi will be needed now more than ever.
