Mark Lawrenson predicts Liverpool’s capital struggles will continue

Liverpool seem to be one of the few sides muddling through a wave of Premier League postponements currently.

The Reds are yet to miss a clash amidst the chaos having beat Newcastle United 3-1 at Anfield in midweek.

Despite being without Virgil van Dijk, Curtis Jones and Fabinho due to positive COVID-19 tests, Jurgen Klopp’s side appear to be determined to play on.

By contrast, today’s opponents Tottenham have missed four matches in recent weeks due to isolation, illness and weather problems.

Writing for BBC Sport, former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has predicted that the lengthy preparation time will suit the London club.

Tottenham have had two weeks without a game because of Covid but they have been able to train for most of that time which will have kept their boss Antonio Conte happy. Knowing what Conte is like, I just think he will have Spurs well-drilled and lying in wait for Liverpool, and the time they have had to prepare for it makes me think they can get something out of the game. Liverpool haven’t won in London yet this season after drawing with Brentford and losing to West Ham, and I think they might have to wait until they play Chelsea at the start of 2022 to try to put that right.

Klopp was unable to confirm whether or not those earlier absent due to positive tests would be available, whilst Harvey Elliott, Adrian, Nat Phillips and Divock Origi remain sidelined.

Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita and Joe Gomez could all return to the fold at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Despite the likely contrast in freshness for this one, the Reds will also possess an abundance of match sharpness that Spurs may struggle to emulate.

Klopp will have his charges fired up and ready to go with many due to be rested in midweek for the Carabao Cup clash against Leicester City.

Lawrenson’s 1-1 prediction should hopefully be made to look wildly off the mark.
