Former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Liverpool defender Joe Gomez ‘needs to leave’ the club.
The 24-year-old has struggled for regular game time this season following on from a serious knee injury suffered midway through last term.
Returning to fitness alongside Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and the signing of Ibrahima Konate, Gomez has been fourth in the pecking order for the most part.
Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor suggested that the centre-back must move away from Anfield to resurrect a stuttering career.
I feel like Gomez needs to leave right now. Trent Alexander-Arnold rarely misses games so he’s not going to get in at right-back. At centre-back, you’ve got Konate, Van Dijk and Matip all in front of him. He needs to go now and play some regular football. We’ve seen players like Tomori go to AC Milan and start again. Gomez could easily do something similar and join a Euro giant. I’m sure he’ll have aspirations of going to the World Cup so he will want to play some football because otherwise he’s got no chance.
So far this season Gomez – who has been linked with Aston Villa and Newcastle – has made 13 fleeting appearances across all competitions.
Capped 11-times by England at the senior level, the London-born ace hasn’t been involved at the international level since picking up the injury in November 2020.

Whilst it’s a hard fact to face up to, this is a World Cup year and at present, it would appear Gomez has little to no chance of featuring.
Previously one of the leading performers in the entire Premier League, let alone as an Englishman, there can be no doubt that the ability is there.
However, with Konate, Matip and Van Dijk all in imperious form, it’s hard to see where an out of sorts Gomez gets much-needed action.
Jurgen Klopp won’t be keen to strip the squad of top talent, but this summer could be a pivotal one for the £22.5million valued man.
