Anthony Gordon sends clear message to Liverpool after historic Champions League night

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon has finally had his say on the persistent speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool and the message from the North East is loud and clear.

The Newcastle United winger has been a long-term person of interest for those inside the AXA Training Centre, with the Reds admiration for the 24-year-old dating back to his time across Stanley Park at Everton.

Make no mistake, the noise surrounding a potential return to Merseyside has only intensified since his £45million switch to St James’ Park.

The 24-year-old joined from Everton in January 2022 and has since established himself as a key part of Newcastle’s side, scoring 36 goals in 142 appearances for the club.

However, despite a string of impressive displays under Eddie Howe that have seen his stock soar, Gordon has moved to distance himself from a summer exit.

For Liverpool and Arne Slot, the pursuit of a new wide option may have just hit a significant roadblock.

The scouser endeared himself to the Toon Army even further after scoring four-goals in a 6-1 thrashing of Qarabag in the Champions League round of 32.

His stunning performance took his Champions League tally to 10 this season, surpassing Alan Shearer as Newcastle’s top goalscorer in the competition.

In a historic night for the Newcastle forward, Gordon was quick to dismiss suggestions of a move away from Tyneside this summer.

Anthony Gordon gives clear verdict on Liverpool transfer rumours

After helping Newcastle all but secure their place in the Champions League last 16, Gordon was quizzed about the transfer rumours linking him with a move away from St James Park.

Responding to the rumours posed by Chronicle Live, he said, “About me? I haven’t seen them. What are they saying?”

As well as Liverpool, the Newcastle man has also been linked with Arsenal in recent weeks. But Gordon gave an emphatic reply.

“I have gone through enough transfer stuff now to know that it is all a load of rubbish,” he said.

Anthony Gordon’s focus remains on Newcastle

The Newcastle forward’s contract runs until 2030, and his latest comments suggest his immediate future lies at St James’ Park.

Gordon’s interview echoes his previous comments regarding transfer speculation.

After learning of the reported links with Liverpool and Arsenal in recent weeks, the 24-year-old has previously said, “It’s the same old, same old. I think they just pick names out of a hat. They do (names out of the hat). I haven’t heard anything; they might want to tell me before they tell you (the media).”

Liverpool’s initial interest in Gordon came during the 2024 summer window.  Whilst the forward admitted the links had initially turned his head, he reiterated his commitment to Newcastle by signing a new long-term deal that autumn.

At the time, he told reporters, “I am focused on me and focused on the team, I am focused on right now.”

Despite putting himself in the shop window with another eye-catching display in Europe, it seems that nothing has changed for Gordon.
