Liverpool face Chelsea battle for £40m South American ‘huge talent’ as Ibrahima Konate uncertainty grows

Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a £40m move for Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez.

It is the kind of South American starlet that has increasingly become the currency of choice for the Premier League’s heavyweights. And for Liverpool, a club currently navigating the choppy waters of a defensive transition under Arne Slot, the name Joel Ordonez is one that continues to flicker brightly on the recruitment radar.

The Reds shock 2-1 defeat at Premier League basement side Wolves earlier this week has only served to intensify the search for defensive reinforcements. With the fallout from that Molineux muddle still being felt, the hunt for a reliable centre-half has led the club’s talent-spotters back to Belgium and specifically to a 21-year-old who has never hidden his affection for the Merseyside club.

The ‘big Liverpool fan’ making Champions League waves

Joel Ordonez is not your average prospect. The Ecuadorian international has already surpassed 100 senior appearances for Club Brugge, including 22 outings in the Champions League across the last two seasons.

It was his form in Europe’s premier competition that saw Crystal Palace lodge a £34.6 million bid in January an approach that was swiftly rebuffed by the Belgian giants.

For Ordonez, however, the rejection wasn’t a source of long-term friction. Despite a brief period of unrest last summer when a move to Marseille collapsed, the defender has matured rapidly.

“I’m indeed a calm person, someone who always keeps a level head. You see that on the pitch too,” Ordonez told Gazet Van Antwerpen. “If opponents challenge me, I never react, but at that moment [the Marseille collapse], I was really angry, yes. Those had been stressful weeks, too. Yet I was able to quickly turn things around afterwards. I’m no longer sad about that missed transfer and I’m just happy to be here. Everything happens for a reason after all.”

That reason, it seems, might be a date with destiny at Anfield. Ordonez has openly admitted to being a “big Liverpool fan” as a child, and his ambition to reach the summit of the game saw him turn down a lucrative escape route to the Middle East.

“I also received an offer from Saudi Arabia (from Al-Hilal), but I’m not looking for that right now. I want to win trophies at the highest level and make a name for myself.”

The Konate factor and a £40m price tag

The urgency behind Liverpool’s interest is inextricably linked to the unresolved future of Ibrahima Konate. The French international is nearing the end of his current deal and, as of yet, has not put pen to paper on an extension. With Slot reportedly keen to revamp a backline that has developed a “soft centre” this term, Ordonez is viewed as an ideal long-term successor.

Standing at 6ft 2in and boasting the versatility to cover at right-back, the Ecuadorian has the physicality and technical attributes Slot demands.

However, the Reds won’t have a free run at the huge talent. Chelsea have been on his trail for some time, and with Moises Caicedo potentially acting as a sounding board for his compatriot, the battle for his signature could turn into a Premier League tug-of-war.

While Liverpool have already wrapped up a deal for Rennes Jeremy Jacquet to join this summer, the feeling is that more depth is required, especially after missing out on Marc Guehi to Manchester City in January. Reports suggest that Brugge could be tempted to sell if an offer in excess of £40 million is presented this summer.

A collision course with Europe’s elite

Liverpool are not the only ones “smarting” from missed targets. Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, and Marseille have all noted Ordonez’s progress, particularly after he scored in Brugge’s final Champions League outing against Atletico Madrid.

For Ordonez, the intention is clear: the World Cup this summer is a shop window, and his bags are already packed for a grander stage.

“It is my intention to move to a big team after the World Cup,” Ordonez admitted. Whether that “big team” is his boyhood favourites remains the £40 million question.

Liverpool have done the groundwork, scouting him alongside the likes of Giovanni Leoni and Konstantinos Koulierakis, but in the volatile world of the transfer market, sentiment only goes so far.

As the Reds prepare for tonight’s FA Cup clash, the need for a “reliable” presence at the back has never been more obvious. If Konate’s contract standoff continues into the summer, the Ecuadorian fan-turned-target might just find his childhood dream becoming a professional reality.

While Ordonez has thrived in the Champions League for Club Brugge, the step up to the Premier League involves a significant increase in physical demand. The data below (based on 2025/26 season averages per 90 minutes) highlights the “aerial dominance” gap that Ordonez would need to bridge to truly replace Konate.

Statistic (Per 90)Joel Ordonez (Brugge)Ibrahima Konate (LFC)
Pass Completion %92.9%89.3%
Progressive Passes4.834.51
Tackles Won0.521.22
Aerial Duel Success %69.2%72.3%
Recoveries5.306.10
Top Speed (km/h)31.2734.80
Age2126

The numbers tell a compelling story of a player who is arguably more comfortable on the ball than Konate. Ordonez’s 92.9% passing accuracy in the Champions League is elite, suggesting he could thrive in Arne Slot’s “control-based” system. He is a modern, ball-playing centre-half who rarely panics under pressure a trait he shares with captain Virgil van Dijk.

Konate remains one of the most dominant aerial forces in Europe, and while Ordonez is respectable at 69.2%, he lacks the raw recovery speed and body-on-the-line tackling frequency that Konate provides.

Ordonez has the technical floor to survive at Anfield, but whether he has the physical ceiling to replicate Konate’s unique blend of power and pace is the multi-million pound gamble FSG must weigh up this summer
