Just nine months ago, the decision to sanction the £35 million departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen was viewed as a pragmatic piece of business for a player seeking guaranteed minutes.
Today, as the young defender thrives under the Bundesliga spotlight, it is looking increasingly like a rare recruitment misstep that Liverpool are now desperate to correct.
Liverpool will have to pay an expensive transfer fee to tempt the former player back to Anfield, as per new reports.
While there is still plenty of action to sink your teeth into ahead of the 2025/26 season wrapping up for good, a lot of off-field discussion at Anfield now seems to be centring on who the reigning Premier League champions will try to sign in the summer.
Liverpool have been notorious big spenders as of late, so this doesn’t come as the most shocking surprise, with an eye-watering £446m dropped on signings last summer.
Already, too, they have signed off on Jeremy Jacquet to link up with Slot’s star-studded camp in the coming months, with the 20-year-old defender garnering a steep £60m price tag.
Liverpool do seem to be prioritising defensive additions, with Virgil Van Dijk not getting any younger now as a 34-year-old colossus. At the same time, Ibrahima Konate’s immediate future at Anfield remains up in the air.
It’s even being speculated now that Jarell Quansah could find himself back on Merseyside in the very near future, to bolster Slot’s defensive ranks, having been discarded by the reigning Premier League champions only last year.
Quansah’s senior career at Liverpool:
| Club | Period | Apps | Goals |
| Liverpool | 2023-2025 | 58 | 3 |
Quansah would never quite make the strides into the senior side that he would’ve liked to when situated at his boyhood club, with Bayer Leverkusen taking the 6-foot-3 centre-back off Liverpool’s hands last summer, after 58 first team appearances at the Reds.
This looked like a risky acquisition on the end of Leverkusen at the time, considering Quansah never quite fit in at Anfield, alongside the likes of Van Dijk.
He has since come into his own at the BayArena, however, when handed consistent first team minutes.
Indeed, in league action this season, Quansah has put his towering frame to excellent use, confidently putting away three Bundesliga goals and averaging a resolute 3.9 duels won per league contest.
This drastic upturn in fortunes looks to have piqued Slot and Co’s interest, but it won’t be cheap for the reigning Premier League champions to tempt the Englishman back to familiar pastures.
How much it will cost Liverpool to re-sign Quansah
As per a new report from Football Insider, the resurgent number four will not be a cheap addition back to the Liverpool ranks, if a reunion takes place.
Indeed, former Everton chief Keith Wyness has revealed that it will cost Liverpool in the region of £51m to pull off a spectacular return.
To add context, he cost Leverkusen a lesser £35m to snap up, only last summer.
He has come out to say: “Well, I’ve checked with my sources, I think I’ve got the number about £51 million is what I’m looking at from Bayer Leverkusen.
Well, I’ve checked with my sources, I think I’ve got the number about £51million is what I’m looking at from Bayer Leverkusen.”
It remains to be seen whether these comments carry concrete weight or are just another rumour that fades away over time.
But it could be a unique fix for Liverpool, as they look to add more defensive reinforcements ahead of a 26/27 season that hopefully sees them return to the top of the Premier League.
With Jacquet already in through the door, expect the Reds to be extremely busy again this off-season.
