Liverpool have made a decisive move to secure their goalkeeping ranks by formally triggering the one-year extension option in Alisson Becker’s contract. The move ensures the Brazilian international will remain at Anfield until at least June 2027.
The 33-year-old, whose initial five-year deal signed in 2021 was due to expire this summer, will now see his stay on Merseyside stretch into a ninth season.
While Alisson’s future has been the subject of speculation with Juventus and AC Milan both credited with interest in taking him back to Serie A the club have moved to end any uncertainty ahead of a crucial summer transition.
The decision reflects the unwavering faith head coach Arne Slot has in his No.1. Despite a challenging second season for the Dutchman, Alisson has remained a cornerstone of the side, maintaining elite performance levels even as the squad adapts to life post-Jurgen Klopp.
Agent confirms Anfield stay
While the club have been characteristically quiet on the specifics of the paperwork, Alisson’s representative confirmed the development to WinWinSports. The agency was clear that the renewal is signed and sealed, though remained tight-lipped on the finer financial details.
“We have just renewed the contract with Liverpool. I have a confidentiality obligation, and I cannot comment on the duration of the contract.”
The extension aligns Alisson’s departure date with other senior leadership figures at the club. Both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are also currently slated to see their deals expire in 2027, potentially marking the end of an era for the spine of the team that conquered Europe and the Premier League.
Injury concerns persist amid Galatasaray setback
The contract news comes at a bittersweet time for the Brazilian, who is currently undergoing another spell on the treatment table. Injuries have increasingly disrupted Alisson’s availability in recent years he has already missed 10 matches this campaign, primarily due to muscle issues.
The latest setback occurred in training, ruling him out of Liverpool’s disappointing Champions League round-of-16 first-leg defeat to Galatasaray. Slot, however, has not ruled out a quick return for the goalkeeper.

Mamardashvili: the successor in waiting
The triggering of Alisson’s clause provides a clearer roadmap for Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Georgian international, signed from Valencia last summer for £29 million, has been serving as the primary deputy following the departure of Caoimhin Kelleher.
At 25, Mamardashvili is widely regarded as the long-term heir to the gloves, but the 2027 extension suggests he will have to wait at least one more season before becoming the undisputed starter. Speaking to The Reds Roundtable, the goalkeeper displayed a level-headedness regarding his role.
“It is never easy because there is just one goal. If I don’t play, I don’t mind. I have to work hard every day and that’s it. My time will come for sure. Maybe not this year but my time will come.”
Since arriving from AS Roma for £65 million in 2018, Alisson has rewritten the record books at Anfield. With 330 appearances and a trophy cabinet that includes every major honour available to a Premier League player most recently the 2024/25 Premier League title his legacy is already secure.
By the time 2027 rolls around, Alisson will be 34. Whether that marks the final chapter of his Liverpool career or leads to another extension, the club have ensured that their most vital defensive asset isn’t going anywhere during this period of transition.
