Kieran Morrison rewards Arne Slot’s faith as ‘remarkable’ Liverpool rise reaches senior international stage

The Liverpool academy has hit another significant milestone. Kieran Morrison earned his first senior international call-up for Northern Ireland following an explosive season with the club’s youth ranks.

Michael O’Neill selected the 19-year-old for a 28-man squad ahead of a high-stakes World Cup play-off semi-final against Italy on March 26.

The club officially confirmed the news:

“Kieran Morrison has earned his first senior international call-up for Northern Ireland.”

The teenager joins a group preparing for a battle in Bergamo. If Northern Ireland defeats the Italians, they face either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina on March 31 to secure a spot in this summer’s World Cup.

A remarkable rise through the ranks

Morrison’s journey to the senior international stage highlights his rapid acceleration. The Northern Ireland-born midfielder originally joined Liverpool from Manchester United at the U14 level. Since then, he has methodically climbed the academy ladder, signing a three-year professional contract in 2024.

This season, the attacking midfielder transformed into a goal-scoring machine. He has registered 14 goals across all competitions for the U21 side. This form convinced Arne Slot to hand him his senior Liverpool debut against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup. He also featured as a substitute in the 3-1 FA Cup victory over Wolves and traveled to Istanbul for the Champions League defeat against Galatasaray.

Inside the AXA Training Centre, coaches have noted a massive shift in Morrison’s maturity. U21 manager Rob Page recently handed the teenager the captain’s armband, a move that sparked an even higher level of performance.

“Giving him the armband has given him another lift as well,” Page noted. “We’ve given him that responsibility, and he’s absolutely shining with it. You see him work hard in training and giving him the armband has made him step up and say: ‘Well, I can’t be the class clown any more and I have to lead by example.’ He’s doing that and some, and I’m so proud of him.”

International recognition and the O’Neill factor

Michael O’Neill believes Morrison provides a solution to Northern Ireland’s struggles in the final third. The manager plans to use these international windows to bridge the gap between youth and senior football.

“The time is right to have a look at him,” O’Neill explained. “We know the player [Morrison] from his time in our under-19s and under-21s. He’s also been around the Liverpool squad in recent weeks, and he’s got some minutes for the first team, so he’s clearly doing very well. We have to accelerate players and get them into senior international football, which I believe helps their development at club level.”

Morrison likely draws inspiration from Liverpool teammate Conor Bradley. Bradley established himself as a fan favourite and captain for his country before his recent injury, proving that the pathway from Kirkby to the international stage remains wide open.

Success in the play-off final would place Northern Ireland in Group B alongside Switzerland, Qatar, and co-hosts Canada. For Morrison, the journey from the U21s to a potential World Cup debut represents one of the most exciting stories in the Liverpool academy this year.
