Thiago Alcantara reveals the hilarious joke he shared with Steven Gerrard after scoring in the Liverpool Legends clash at Anfield
The grass at Anfield has played host to some of the greatest midfielders in football history, but rarely do two different eras of excellence collide so perfectly as they did on Saturday.
In a star-studded Liverpool Legends clash against Borussia Dortmund, the 2-2 draw was secondary to the sheer nostalgia on display.
While the afternoon was a charitable celebration for the LFC Foundation, the competitive fire of two former Liverpool midfielders Thiago Alcantara and Steven Gerrard ensured the 60,000 fans in attendance witnessed something truly special and enjoyable.
A masterclass in midfield elegance
From the opening whistle, it didn’t take long for Thiago to remind the Kop exactly why he was so revered during his time on Merseyside and ultimately received STRAUSS Player of the Match on his Anfield return.
Despite being the youngster of the Legends squad at 34, the Spaniard dictated the tempo with a grace that felt instantly familiar. He was at the heart of every attacking move, threading passes through the Dortmund defence with surgical precision.
The highlight of the first half came when Thiago opened the scoring inside the 21st minute. Displaying his signature flair, he utilised a trademark no-look pass to find space before finishing with a precise strike that left the goalkeeper stranded. It wasn’t just a goal it was a statement that his technical quality remains untouched by time.
The ultimate sign of respect
For Thiago, the thrill of scoring at a sold-out Anfield was only eclipsed by the man standing next to him in the center circle. Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the final whistle, the playmaker was visibly moved by the opportunity to share the pitch with the club’s greatest-ever captain.
“It’s amazing. Two things got together – that is a full Anfield and playing with this legend [Gerrard]. It was an unbelievable moment and I will keep it with me for sure.”
That reverence was mutual. Before the match, Gerrard had expressed his excitement about the recruitment of the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona man to the Legends roster.
We love him, we love watching him play,” Gerrard said.
“Fantastic technical player, and when I found out he was involved, it gave me a big lift. We need to recruit well. We’re not getting any younger, so we need some young fresh legs in there. We’re delighted to have him.”
Humor amidst the quality
Despite the high level of play, the afternoon wasn’t without its lighter moments. Thiago, known for his humble and witty personality, shared a joke with Gerrard following his early goal. Reflecting on the physical toll of the match, Thiago quipped about his rare burst of pace:
“When I scored, Stevie came and I told him it was the first sprinting I did since I arrived in Liverpool! Why not?! In that moment we just react, we are comfortable in the box. It’s nice to score.
Gerrard, ever the perfectionist, offered a more self-deprecating take on the legends pace of play.
“The brain still works the same speed, it’s just the body is two or three seconds behind! So, there were a few frustrating moments. But it was nice to link up with a bit of quality today. Deserved Man of the Match [Thiago].”
A celebration of an era
The match also served as a homecoming for Jurgen Klopp, who stole plenty of the spotlight with his trademark fist pumps and a raucous reception from the faithful.
While the German’s presence provided the emotional backdrop, the performance on the pitch belonged to the midfielders.
Although Gerrard admitted a slight disappointment at not securing the win for the supporters, the day was an undeniable success for the LFC Foundation.
In the end, it was a reminder that while squads change and players retire, genuine class is permanent. For ninety minutes, the Anfield crowd got to dream again, watching the “brain” of the modern era link up with the “heart” of the previous one.
