“We, the fans, are the heartbeat of the football club” – more protests planned as ticket prices set to soar at Liverpool

Spion Kop 1906, who organise flag and banner displays inside Liverpool’s famous Kop at Anfield, have announced all flags will be removed at the Reds’ home ground for the rest of the season, as they stand in solidarity with protests on rising ticket prices.

The mood at Anfield right now is at an all-time low, with another defeat having to be stomached this season, last time out, as Liverpool fell to an expected 2-0 loss against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Arne Slot’s side will be hopeful that they can get back to winning ways against Fulham on Saturday, as they return to their famous home.

But the showdown with Marco Silva’s Cottagers will signal the start of fan protests at Anfield, as Reds supporter group Spirit of Shankly oppose the rise of ticket prices, which are set to come into place over the coming years on Merseyside.

Indeed, rising costs mean an adult general admission season ticket, come the 2028/29 season, could skyrocket up to an eye-watering £971.50, with the group releasing a statement earlier in the month to say no to multi-year ticket price increases.

The protests will occur inside and outside of Anfield during the Fulham match, with supporters advised not to spend money inside the ground and to make their voices known on the walk down to the famous ground.

A further development has now seen Spion Kop 1906 voice their frustrations, as they make their own stand, to further up the pressure on the powers that be to reverse these potential ticket price hikes.

What Spion Kop 1906 said

When you picture Anfield in your head, you imagine the whole multitude of flags being waved in the air by the raucous Kop, before You’ll Never Walk Alone and as a game is about to take place.

Well, for the game against Fulham, and for the rest of the season – minus the PSG clash – this usual sight will be no more, as Spion Kop 1906 has released an impassioned statement about their decision to halt all flags and banners.

Taking to social media, they have said: “After much consultation, all Spion Kop 1906 flags will no longer be present at Anfield at the remaining fixtures.

“We feel we have been left with no other option, year on year the rising costs are pricing more fans out of football. Fans are increasingly reaching their breaking point as football becomes unaffordable.

“We must take a stand against the rising cost of football, we feel there’s a value to being valued. The culture and traditions, which have been passed down by previous generations must be preserved, with football remaining accessible to future generations.

“We, the fans, are the heartbeat of the football club; the same heartbeat that Liverpool Football Club market for a pound note. We urge FGS to remember that our club should embody the identity of its surrounding community and resonate with the values of the local area.

“What is Anfield without its heartbeat? Do the right thing for the future of our game. Listen to the heartbeat. NO TO TICKET PRICE INCREASES.”

The club have fired back to state that they are up for meaningful discussions about a solution, but this isn’t the first time fans have voted with their feet in the wake of ticket prices rising.

In 2016, when Jurgen Klopp was just beginning his reign as Liverpool boss, Reds supporters everywhere decided to walk out on the 77th minute mark of their draw with Sunderland, owing to disputes over matchday tickets potentially rising to £77, from £59.

Making their voices known with chants, before leaving the stadium in a mass exodus, this isn’t an unusual form of protest from the passionate Liverpool masses.

It has all reached boiling point, in the modern day, for another protest to now be on the cards, with the Anfield Wrap’s John Gibbons summing the current state of affairs eloquently, during a recent seven-minute rant.

Taking to the popular fan channel to get things off his chest, the wholehearted Liverpool supporter stated, among many other things, “In this city, we value hard work. We value togetherness. We want to stick together, look after each other, and we value humility.”

Responding in such a way, after seeing Dominik Szoboszlai show off a golden watch after putting in an insipid display during the 2-1 Brighton and Hove Albion defeat, it’s no wonder why there is such a disconnect forming, and why the hunger for protests has come back.
