Van Dijk warns Liverpool teammates ‘Sunday is waiting’ after Paris St Germain blow

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk speaks exclusively to readLiverpoolFC after the Champions League exit to Paris St Germain in the quarter finals, dismissing “moral victories” ahead of the Merseyside derby.

The Reds attacking output at Anfield was a stark contrast to their toothless display in France, where they failed to register a single shot on target. While the second leg saw a massive increase in intent racking up 21 total attempts a lack of clinical finishing remained the fatal flaw, with only five of those efforts actually testing PSG’s regular number one Lucas Chevalier

While the Reds displayed significantly more fight than in the first leg, their efforts ultimately went unrewarded. Instead, it was PSG who provided a masterclass in ruthlessness; a devastating second-half brace from Ousmane Dembélé at Anfield condemned Arne Slot’s side to a 4-0 aggregate defeat.

The result ensures a bittersweet exit for Liverpool, sent packing from the competition by the French champions for the second successive season.

The lights at Anfield were dimming, but the atmosphere in the mixed zone remained heavy with the weight of a season-defining defeat.

Following Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain completing a 4-0 aggregate exit from the Champions League captain Virgil van Dijk stopped to speak exclusively with ReadLiverpoolFC.

While the second-leg performance showed flashes of the classic Anfield European spirit, the Dutch defender was in no mood for moral victories. Standing tall but visibly drained, Van Dijk offered a candid, raw assessment of where the Reds currently stand under Arne Slot.

“Knocking on the door is not enough”

Liverpool dominated the second half, pinning the French champions back and creating several golden opportunities before Ousmane Dembélé’s late double killed the tie. When asked if the team could take heart from “giving it a good go” against the tournament favorites, Van Dijk’s response was sharp.

“That’s the bare minimum, isn’t it?” the captain told ReadLiverpoolFC. “It’s disappointing to be knocked out, but PSG deserved to go through based on the two games.”

When pressed on the fact that Liverpool spent the majority of the second half “knocking on the door” of the PSG defense, Van Dijk refused to sugarcoat the outcome.

“Knocking on the door is not enough. I’m disappointed that we were knocked out, but that is the reality. You have to be clinical at this level, and we weren’t.”

No Time to grieve: The Derby looms

The exit marks the end of Liverpool’s quest for silverware this season, leaving the squad with only the battle for a top-five Premier League finish to occupy their remaining six fixtures. The first of those is a high-stakes trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday for the Merseyside derby.

Despite the magnitude of the upcoming clash with Everton, Van Dijk admitted the wound of European elimination is still fresh.

“We should be very disappointed at this stage and at this point this evening,” he admitted. “But a massive game awaits for us. We all know how big it is. It will obviously be a tough one, but it is something to look forward to.”

However, he ended with a sobering note on his current headspace: “But at this stage, I’m just not in a good place because we got knocked out of the Champions League.”

Van Dijk’s honesty reflects a dressing room that knows “nearly” isn’t good enough for a club of Liverpool’s stature. With Chelsea breathing down their necks just four points behind in sixth, the Reds cannot afford a European hangover.

Sunday’s derby isn’t just about local pride anymore it’s about ensuring that nights like tonight however painful remain a fixture on the Anfield calendar next season. For the captain, the message is clear: the talking is over, and only a win at Everton can begin to heal the scars of this PSG exit.
