Mohamed Salah to Real Madrid? Madrid legend admits transfer interest

Real Madrid icon Fernando Hierro has admitted he would love to see Mohamed Salah trade Anfield for the Bernabéu when his Liverpool contract expires at the end of the campaign.

We are edging ever closer now to Mohamed Salah hanging up his boots at Anfield, once and for all.

It will be a very emotional occasion when the Egyptian lines up for his last ever Liverpool game at the end of next month, with Brentford the visitors to Merseyside on that fateful day.

He, thankfully, doesn’t look to be going out with a whimper anymore, with Salah getting the ball rolling for Arne Slot‘s men in last weekend’s Merseyside Derby, when he confidently beat Jordan Pickford to make it 1-0.

Up to a nine Premier League goals in total against the Reds arch rivals, the number 11 will be remembered, long after his Anfield days are over, for all his spellbinding performances over the years.

It remains up in the air as to where the two-time Premier League winner will next call home, with speculation previously bubbling under the surface that Salah would retreat to the Saudi Pro League.

His next onward destination remains a mystery, but if ex-Real Madrid centre-back Fernando Hierro had it his way, he would be demanding that Los Blancos snap up Salah when his Reds deal expires, as the Spaniard is a huge fan of the ageing winger.

“Of course, I would love that” – Hierro opens about Salah’s next move

Like Salah, whose career has been defined by a sustained excellence in the Premier League and Champions League, Hierro operated at a similarly elite level throughout his time in Spain.

The comparison is apt; both players have made the highest echelons of the European game their natural habitat. While Salah continues to be the focal point of Liverpool’s attack under Arne Slot, Hierro’s comments underscore the enduring appeal the Egyptian retains among the continent’s traditional powerhouses.

The now-retired 58-year-old, who once even called Bolton Wanderers his home, would go on to make a mammoth 601 appearances for Madrid, resulting in Hierro winning three Champions Leagues and five La Ligas at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The La Liga giants are arguably one of the biggest clubs in the world, and Hierro believes that Salah would thrive in such a location, so much so that he believes the Egyptian would be a dream free transfer for Alvaro Arbeloa’s men to try and clinch.

He said, when speaking to ON Sports, about Salah’s world-class ability: “Salah to Real Madrid? Of course, I would love that. Salah is an outstanding player in every sense of the word.

“No one can deny his huge impact at Liverpool and the achievements he has made, especially winning the Premier League.

I would love to see him at Real Madrid – anything is possible in football. Salah is the type of player any club in the world would want to sign. He is exceptional and has a direct impact on the pitch.

He is not just a great player; he is a true football phenomenon who makes the difference wherever he plays.”

That direct impact that Hierro mentioned was clear for all to see at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, as the game was stuck in a cagey deadlock, right up until Salah seized the opportunity to hand his team the lead, after Cody Gakpo found him expertly.

The former defender also opened up about the previous attempts he has tried to sign 113-time Egypt international, when speaking to ON Sports, with Hierro, the Sporting Director of Saudi Pro League outfit, Al Nassr.

Hierro’s failed attempts to sign Salah

There had been rumbles, long before Salah officially confirmed he would be leaving Anfield behind, that the Reds veteran was looking to move on from Merseyside.

Indeed, Hierro has now confirmed during this interview that the much-loved Liverpool servant held tentative talks over a move to Al Nassr during the 2024/25 season.

Unfortunately, while he was a serial winner during his playing days, he had to concede defeat this time around, with Salah focusing instead on renewing his Anfield deal.

He said: “There were indeed many reports in the past about the possibility of Mohamed Salah moving to the Saudi Pro League, but ultimately, the decision always lies with the player.

“At that time, his main focus was on Liverpool, which is completely normal for a player of his level.”

It will be intriguing to see if the likes of Al Nassr do try to go back in for the likes of the soon-to-be free agent, with Salah still clearly capable of producing unforgettable moments during high-stakes games, as evidenced in his breakaway opener against Everton.

A move to Madrid does feel like it’s off the cards, though, with the 33-year-old winding down his playing days.
