- Liverpool are keeping tabs on Denzel Dumfries ahead of the summer
- The Reds were interested in signing the Inter Milan ace in January
- He does not tick all boxes for the club, but stability at right-back is needed
Paul Joyce has ignited talk of Denzel Dumfries joining Liverpool from Inter Milan this summer with his latest report.
With only five more games left to play, fans are also looking ahead to the summer transfer window.
It would be unrealistic to expect the Fenway Sports Group to break the bank like they did last year, but it is evident that reinforcements are needed in several positions.
Despite all their extravagance last summer, the Reds notably did not invest a large amount of money to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold after his transfer to Real Madrid.
Instead, they brought in Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for £29.5million, thus placing a great amount of trust in Conor Bradley.
However, with both players struggling with injuries, the right-back position emerged as a major headache for Arne Slot.
It is this instability that is driving Liverpool’s interest in Dumfries, according to Joyce, who is considered a top-tier journalist among the Reds faithful.
Dumfries has £21.7m release clause
The Merseyside-based club are seemingly aware that the right-back position needs to be addressed, as they were interested in Dumfries in January, too.
However, they chose to focus on a deal to sign Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes instead, as per The Times.
Nevertheless, Liverpool are still ‘aware of the situation’ regarding Dumfries at Inter ahead of the summer.
The Netherlands international has a £21.7m release clause at Inter that becomes active this summer, thus making him an attractive target for the Anfield outfit.
However, at 30, Dumfries is not exactly the kind of player that the Premier League heavyweights would usually go for.
Therefore, it remains to be seen if they will firm up their interest in the right-back with a formal offer soon.
Another Dutch signing? Liverpool fans will be annoyed
It is true that the six-time European champions need to look at the situation at right-back, but the ReadLiverpool verdict is that another Dutch signing might not go down well among the supporters.
Last year’s league champions notably have four Netherlands international in their ranks in the shape of Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and Frimpong.
Although Van Dijk has been an integral part of the team for the better part of the last decade, Gravenberch, Gakpo and Frimpong have left much to be desired, particularly this season.
Therefore, adding another Dutchman to the squad might not be a smart thing for Liverpool to do, especially if they want to make the fans satisfied.
This is also because the supporters are increasingly annoyed with Slot and the hierarchy for continuing to back him.
No disrespect to Dumfries, though, as he has often impressed for club and country.
