“I don’t want to put pressure on the boy.” Jürgen Klopp speaks out on Florian Wirtz’s struggles at Liverpool and sends a heartfelt message to his former stars.

The weight of a £116 million price tag is heavy enough to crush even the most seasoned veterans, let alone a young talent navigating his first year in the Premier League.

For Florian Wirtz, the transition from the fluid, championship-winning system of Bayer Leverkusen to the high-intensity spotlight of Anfield hasn’t been the fairy tale many expected.

With just five goals and three assists across his first 30 league outings, critics have been quick to question the record-breaking investment.

However, one man who understands the unique pressure of the “Liverpool way” better than anyone has stepped in to offer a shield of protection. Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, who spent nearly a decade defining the modern standards of the club, has spoken out in defence of his compatriot.

“I don’t want to put pressure on the boy”

Speaking to BBC Sport ahead of the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup in the United States, Klopp was asked specifically about Wirtz’s stuttering form on Merseyside. Despite the underwhelming statistics which include a lone goal in both the FA Cup and Champions League Klopp remains a firm believer in the midfielder’s ceiling.

“I hope Flo Wirtz will have a fantastic, fantastic World Cup,” Klopp said. “I think he has everything you need to be a standout player. I don’t want to put any pressure on the boy. I really think he showed already how good he can be in a difficult season.”

Klopp’s comments serve as a timely reminder that even world-class talents require an adaptation period. While Wirtz has struggled for consistency, his flashes of brilliance in European competition have shown glimpses of the player Liverpool fought so hard to sign.

A special summer for the “Klopp Alumni”

While Klopp has been linked with a return to the dugout at Real Madrid or even a sensational second act at Anfield, he remains committed to his sabbatical. This summer, he will trade the touchline for the television studio, serving as a pundit for MagentaSport alongside Thomas Müller.

From his new vantage point, Klopp is relishing the chance to watch his former players and current Redscompete on the world’s biggest stage. He specifically highlighted the emotional narrative of Andy Robertson, whose Scotland side has made a historic return to the tournament.

“I hope my players will have a great World Cup. I hope that Andy Robertson and Alisson Becker can enjoy that when they meet each other. Can you imagine that you play together for such a long time and Scotland qualifies first time, I don’t know, since when, for the World Cup, and you meet each other, your friends, your mutual friends, and you meet each other in a game like that? I mean, that must be one of the happiest moments in your life.”

Wishing for global success

Klopp’s affection for his former squad remains undiminished. As he prepares to analyze the tournament, he sent a heartfelt message to the core group of players who helped him conquer England and Europe during his tenure.

“I wish Virgil [van Dijk] will have a great tournament. I really wish for Mo [Salah] that he will have a great tournament. I honestly wish that Sadio [Mane] will have a great tournament. Macca [Alexis Mac Allister], if he won, if they win it again. It was so nice to see him with a medal around his neck and when he came back to Brighton. So many [of my] former players are part of the World Cup, which is really, really nice.”

For Liverpool fans, Klopp’s words offer a sense of perspective. While the 2025/26 campaign may have been a testing one for new arrivals like Wirtz, the endorsement of a club legend suggests that the talent is still very much there it just needs the right stage, like the upcoming World Cup, to truly reignite.
