- Jamie Carragher calls out Florian Wirtz
- Questions German’s performances this season
- Claims the midfielder has had it too easy
Jamie Carragher pulls no punches as he labels £116m Florian Wirtz a Liverpool “disappointment” following the 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford.
With the German star struggling to justify his British record fee, Carragher questions his “fight” and warns that Arne Slot’s patience is wearing thin after a bruising afternoon in Manchester.
Liverpool signed Florian Wirtz for £116 million with a lot of promise, but the German has failed to impress in his debut season at Anfield.
The attacking midfielder had a tough start to his career in the Premier League, needing to wait until December to get his first assist in the 2-1 win over Tottenham, and then scoring his first goal in the very next match, a 2-1 win over Wolverhampton.
Fans have been patient with the German star as he has been playing under a lot of pressure and has moved out of his home country and league for the first time in his career.
However, with the first season ending, things have now progressed as expected, and many are questioning the signing from Bayer Leverkusen.
Jamie Carragher hits out at Florian Wirtz
Jamie Carragher was on Sky Sports after the 3-2 loss to Manchester United, questioning the performance of Florian Wirtz. He claimed that the Liverpool star was not getting the criticism he deserved and that the pundits have been too easy on him.
The former Reds defender slammed the midfielder, saying that he has failed to turn up for the club once again. He does not see the former Leverkusen star showing any fight on the pitch and said:
“The one player I think has had a very easy ride is Florian Wirtz. I’ve never moved clubs let alone moved to a different country. But, I think we’ve given him time. We’ve been very, very kind. He was poor today. And even if Liverpool play really well, it’s still Szoboszlai and even at times this season Salah.”
“Salah hasn’t been the Salah of last season, but he has still been one of Liverpool’s best attackers. I commentated Liverpool away at Burnley earlier in the season and I described Wirtz as being neat and tidy. I was being kind then. I wouldn’t describe him as anything different right now. He’s a year into his Liverpool career.”
Wirtz has five goals and three assists in the Premier League this season, while adding another goal and three assists in his 11 UEFA Champions League matches.
What do Liverpool fans need from Florian Wirtz?
Liverpool fans have been very patient with Wirtz this season, but the German has been riding the wave for some time. The 23-year-old is playing in the toughest league in the world and had the pressure of the £116 million price tag, but that needs to be out of his mind by now.
The Anfield crowd has always backed him on the pitch, but his performances have shown very little to suggest that he was worth the fee paid by the club. The German star has the FIFA World Cup this summer, and should be getting a few appearances under his belt.
Arne Slot and the fans will hope he regains the confidence he had on the ball during his time in the Bundesliga and replicates it in the Premier League next season.
