Anfield international watch: Stunning Kostas Tsimikas goal steals the show as Liverpool sensation debuts

An action-packed evening of international football brought plenty of smiles to Anfield as Liverpool’s senior stars and academy starlets grabbed the headlines across Europe.

From a seasoned veteran showcasing his clinical edge in Scandinavia to a rising teenager crossing a massive career milestone in Belfast, the Reds’ presence was felt heavily on the international stage.

Here is your comprehensive breakdown of a stellar night for Liverpool’s international contingent.

Greek Scouser silences Stockholm

Sweden 2-2 Greece – International Friendly

For Kostas Tsimikas, international duties usually provide a welcome opportunity to top up his match minutes. In Solna’s Strawberry Arena on Thursday night, however, the charismatic left-back gave Liverpool fans a reminder of his technical quality, scoring a breathtaking opening goal in Greece’s highly entertaining 2-2 draw against Sweden.

Stepping out into the hostile atmosphere of Stockholm, Greece faced a formidable Swedish outfit using the fixture as their final, crucial warm-up match before heading out to the World Cup.

With heavyweights like his club team-mate Alexander Isak and Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres leading the line under Graham Potter, Sweden expected to dominate.

Tsimikas, however, had completely different plans.

With just under 10 minutes on the clock, Greece earned their second corner of the evening. Tsimikas’ initial delivery was cleared by the Swedish defense but only as far as Christos Tzolis on the left wing. Tzolis kept his composure, spotting Tsimikas ghosting unmarked toward the edge of the 18-yard box. Spotting the run, Tzolis pulled back a perfectly weighted pass.

Without a second thought, the Liverpool left-back met the ball cleanly, striking a first-time, side-footed half-volley with his weaker right foot. The ball sliced through a crowded penalty area and nested into the top corner, leaving Swedish goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt entirely helpless.

Tsimikas played the first 62 minutes of the match, balancing his attacking intent with a rigorous defensive shifts before being rested ahead of Greece’s upcoming fixtures.

Sweden eventually found their footing in the second half. Gyökeres equalized in the 52nd minute with a low drive, and a heavy raft of substitutions by Graham Potter saw substitute Gustaf Nilsson turn the game completely on its head in the 68th minute to give Sweden a 1-0 lead.

Isak, who started the match, was a constant thorn in the side of the Greek defence but was pulled off after 63 minutes as part of Potter’s pre-World Cup management plan.

Just as it seemed Sweden would secure a winning send-off, Greece struck deep into stoppage time. In the 94th minute, Giorgos Masouras met a teasing cross from teenager Konstantinos Kostoulas to slide home a dramatic equalizer, ensuring Tsimikas and his teammates walked away with a hard-earned draw.

Kieran Morrison earns historic Northern Ireland debut

Northern Ireland 1-0 Guinea – International Friendly

While Tsimikas was grabbing the headlines with goals in Scandinavia, a monumental piece of Liverpool’s future was unfolding at Windsor Park.

Just weeks after putting pen to paper on a brand-new long-term contract at Anfield, 19-year-old academy sensation Kieran Morrison was handed his senior international debut for Northern Ireland.

Manager Michael O’Neill named an incredibly bold, youthful lineup against Guinea, boasting an average age of just 22.1 years—the youngest starting XI fields by Northern Ireland since the Second World War. Placed right at the heart of that youth revolution was Morrison, starting on the wing.

The teenager showed zero signs of stage fright, immediately looking like he belonged on the senior international stage. Operating with his signature directness, Morrison spent the first half driving at the Guinea defense, linking up brilliantly with Standard Liège’s Shea Charles.

Just before the interval, the young Red nearly registered a debut assist, cutting inside and firing a dangerous, low cross across the face of goal that required a frantic, last-ditch clearance from the Guinean backline.

Morrison played the opening 45 minutes before being substituted at half-time a planned move by O’Neill to manage the youngster’s minutes. His efforts laid the foundation for Northern Ireland to secure a gritty 1-0 victory, marking a dream start to what promises to be a stellar international career for the Liverpool starlet.

Tsimikas’ elite finishing ability under pressure provides an encouraging sign for Arne Slot as he evaluates his squad depth. While Milos Kerkez remains the primary option on the left side of defense, having a confident, goal-scoring “Greek Scouser” waiting in the wings ensures Liverpool’s tactical flexibility remains incredibly high.

Concurrently, Morrison’s fast-tracked progression into senior international football completely vindicates Liverpool’s decision to secure his long-term future last month.

As the Reds prepare for another demanding multi-competition campaign, Morrison is quickly proving that he has the temperament and talent to transition from academy standout to first-team contributor in the very near future.
