Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has predicted that this weekend’s Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester United will be cagey as opposed to an entertaining showdown.
Ultimately, other than their combined Champions League aspirations, both being on the line, but very nearly secured, there isn’t a lot riding on the latest clash between two of English football’s fiercest rivals.
Indeed, both Liverpool and Manchester United look comfortable in the fact that they’ll finish inside the top five positions in the Premier League come the end of the season, with Michael Carrick’s hosts on 61 points at the time of writing, above Arne Slot‘s side, who have slightly less with 58.
With their nearest challengers in sixth and below some way off the chasing pack, Liverpool won’t feel too nervous about clinching a top-five position, in a season that has often been fraught with anxiety and unease, after Slot lifted the Premier League title so emphatically during this debut campaign.
Manchester United would certainly settle for a Champions League berth this term, especially after the embarrassment of last season’s dismal 15th-place finish.
The upcoming clash at Old Trafford is unlikely to be a high-octane thriller. With both sides seemingly content with their current standing, Alan Shearer has predicted a stalemate, noting in his latest Metro column that the match has all the hallmarks of a dull affair.
Alan Shearer’s bore draw prediction
Shearer is well-known to fans of the Premier League for being the competitive division’s all-time top goalscorer, with a crazy 260 goals next to his name.
Despite being held in such high esteem for being an entertaining attacker, he doesn’t think his past goalscoring excellence will rub off on any players for either United or Liverpool on Sunday, as he predicts the final scoreline at Old Trafford will be a drab stalemate.
Giving his reasons in the Metro, the Tyneside great stated: “It’s not the Liverpool or Man United we know at all from how they have played this season. I don’t think it’ll be a classic.
“I think because of where both teams are mentally and physically, and also in terms of where they are in the league.
I don’t think a draw would be a bad result for both of them.”
Shearer is right to suggest that a draw wouldn’t be a bad result for either team, as it would allow them both to just keep ticking along nicely, in their hopes of securing Champions League football for the 2026/27 campaign.
However, supporters of both clubs will be far from satisfied with a tepid draw. History suggests they should expect more; clashes between these two fierce rivals have traditionally been high-scoring spectacles rather than the forgettable, sluggish affairs predicted by some.
A stalemate is unlikely
Indeed, when looking at the respective head-to-head record between the two arch rivals, only one of their last ten games has ended in a goalless affair.
There have been several occasions where draws have taken place, but they’ve often been jam-packed full of entertainment, regardless, with a 2-2 draw last season at Anfield seeing Amad Diallo net late on for the ecstatic visitors.
Liverpool have a history of silencing the Old Trafford faithful, having beaten their rivals on their own turf multiple times. This includes a dominant 3-0 victory just last season, which served as a crucial stepping stone during Arne Slot’s triumphant march toward the Premier League title.
Memories also remain fresh of the infamous 5-0 thrashing in 2021 under Jurgen Klopp. That day, Mohamed Salah dismantled the United defense with a blistering hat-trick, sending the traveling supporters into raptures while emptying the home stands long before the final whistle.
Salah’s absence might well dampen Liverpool’s firepower somewhat, as he fights hard to be back fit before the end of the season.
But, despite this unwanted news with the Egyptian, Liverpool fans will be praying another memorable win is on the cards on their brisk travels over to Manchester, as opposed to Shearer’s dull predictions coming true.
