Alexander-Arnold open to replicating Gerrard’s midfield role

Trent Alexander-Arnold admits he is open to playing in midfield again one day, emulating his hero Steven Gerrard in the process.

The 21-year-old has been a revelation at right-back for Liverpool, arguably performing better than any player in his position currently.

Alexander-Arnold used to adopt a midfield role during his academy days, however, copying Gerrard’s style of play and earning rave reviews.

Speaking to the media during England duty, the youngster admitted he doesn’t rule out the potential of changing roles later in his career:

[I modelled myself on] Gerrard, really. Everything about his game I always admired. I always studied him and wanted to be like him.”

It’s maybe not that important to compare because at a young age, you haven’t achieved the things those types of players have. It’s difficult to say whether you will or won’t. Who knows?

For now, it’s about having an open mind and wanting to achieve those types of levels, wanting to be those types of players, wanting to reach the levels they’ve reached.

Being regarded in the same bracket as them is something the best players want.

Jurgen Klopp has a tricky decision to make with Alexander-Arnold moving forward.

On one hand, he is an outstanding right-back who is already such a crucial player from that position.

On the flip side, though, there are times when he could arguably be even more devastating in midfield, using his creativity and technique to wreak havoc in the final third, like Gerrard or Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

It is a nice headache for Klopp to have – perhaps like Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich, Alexander-Arnold will be able to dovetail between the two positions.

He is a remarkable young player and Liverpool are fortunate to have him. His versatility is an added bonus.
