Arteta provides update on future of Liverpool-linked Saka

Mike Arteta has reiterated the importance of tying down Bukayo Saka to a new deal at Arsenal.

The 18-year-old has shone for the Gunners this season, and was in good form at the weeked as he registered an assist in Sunday’s 3-2 win over Everton.

Saka is reportedly a transfer target for Liverpool this summer, should he not agree a new contract at the Emirates.

Speaking to Sky Sports News after the victory over Everton, Arteta provided an update on the situation, saying the club intend to extend the youngster’s stay at the Emirates:

That is something the club has to get sorted. My priority is that he continues to play like he is doing and he keeps developing. He is always asking the right questions.

He is a very brave guy. Every time he gets into the final third, he is trying to cause problems for the opponent. He deserves these chances, he is doing very well and that’s why he is in the team.

He’s great for the club. If we can get players from the academy and give them real chances even when we have other people fit, it shows we believe in them. He’s responded well.

Saka looks a hugely exciting prospect, outlined by a total of eight assists this season, with no Arsenal player registering more than his five in the Europa League.

Although the teenager has often been used on the left wing, he can also operate at left-back, making him a potential backup to Andy Robertson.

Saka remains raw, but he could learn his trade under the Scot at Anfield, filling in when required and also proving to be an attacking option, too.

I expect him to sign a new deal at Arsenal, considering he seems happy there and is featuring regularly, but Liverpool should be ready to pounce just in case.
