Atletico Madrid pull out of Cavani move ahead of Liverpool clash

Atletico Madrid have pulled out of a January move for Edinson Cavani, ahead of their Champions League meeting with Liverpool.

The La Liga giants take on the Reds next month, with the first leg of the last-16 tie taking place at the Wanda Metropolitano on February 18th.

Despite being strongly linked with a move to Atletico this month, Sky Sports claim that Atletico have ended their interest in the Paris Saint-Germain striker.

I am relieved that Liverpool won’t have to face Cavani in the Champions League.

The 32-year-old has proven pedigree, with only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo scoring more goals in the 2010s.

I believe his big-game mentality would have made him a major threat against the Reds, adding firepower to a team with just 22 goals in 21 league games this season.

I still think Atletico will be a threat to Liverpool’s hopes of retaining the Champions League, though.

Their defensive expertise means scoring an away goal will be tricky, and if the Reds fail to do that, it will leave them in a precarious position in the return leg at Anfield.
