Benteke’s delight after first goal for the Reds

Christian Benteke has expressed his happiness after scoring his first competitive goal for Liverpool.

The Belgian international scored the only goal of the game on his home debut against AFC Bournemouth on Monday, as Brendan Rodgers’ side kept up their perfect start to the league campaign.

The Cherries were adamant that the goal shouldn’t have stood as Philippe Coutinho was in an offside position, but it was Benteke who converted Jordan Henderson’s cross and found the net for the Reds for the first time.

“I think it’s a great day, for myself and the team,” Benteke said, as quoted in the Liverpool Echo.

“The more important thing tonight is the three points.

“In my mind I just said ‘keep going and you might be able to get to the ball’. I made the right decision and I’m happy.”

The 24-year-old’s £32.5m move to Anfield is the second-highest fee the club have paid for a player, and the former Aston Villa man is beginning to show why Rodgers was so keen to bring him in.

The Reds are yet to concede a goal this season after two clean sheets on the bounce; something that the 24-year-old forward believes is important.

“I think it’s a great feeling, and it’s important for the confidence for the next game,” explained Benteke.

“The more important thing is the clean sheet. We didn’t concede and we won tonight so we go on to the next one.”

Liverpool’s next outing will undoubtedly be tougher than the previous two, as they head to north London to face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
