Liverpool were blitzed on Tuesday night by a weak Basel side that simply put them to shame. Antagonism is one way to describe the feeling towards the players that Rodgers opted for in his starting XI, 2 of which included Dejan Lovren and Jose Enrique, one who cost the club a fortune to gain assets that any club would probably rather not have, and one who defends a lot better in a virtual game based environment as oppose to reality.
Rodgers’ inconsistency led to a shattering 1-1 draw with Basel taking the advantage in front of a silent Anfield support on the 25th minute. Much later on, a stunning equaliser by (someone who could be considered as the face of the club) Steven Gerrard in the 81st minute restored hope and got the Kop on their feet for the first time during the entire 90 minute encounter.
Regardless of these factors Liverpool only dominated in one respective statistic, this being the possession, keeping the ball for a total of 61%.
But it’s not good enough, and this simply cannot go on for any longer.
Liverpool battled the entire way throughout these group stages to aim for second place within the group, however, ended up achieving a 3rd place spot knocking them straight down into the embarrassing depths of the Europa League.
Achieving just 1 win in 6 and a total of 5 points (only 1 more than Ludogorets) simply isn’t good enough, and when you’re playing your strongest XI in each and every match, concerns should begin to be raised.
It’s time for change either in players, or the Manager, who is at the helm of responsibility for bringing a bunch of talentless players to Anfield in the first place.
Players such as Mignolet, Lovren, Manquillo, Markovic, Balotelli, and Lambert simply embarrass the club, its ethics, and strong reputation that it has within Europe.
Nerveless players like Sakho, Flanagan, and Sturridge may never get to experience the Champion’s League in a red shirt, players who by far deserved better after the amount of energy, time and sacrifice that they gave to the club to help them return to where they deserve to be.
Liverpool will be lucky to gain anything at all from the Europa League and more determined teams such as Ajax and Zenit will get the better of this weak side should they be unfortunate enough to play the Dutch/Russian league champions.
This club has been re-mastered by Brendan and we must appreciate that, however, was Suarez much more than he appeared? Was he potentially the reason that Rodgers looked better than he may actually be?
