Carlos is on Liverpool’s ‘transfer target list’

Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos is claimed to be on Liverpool’s ‘list of transfer targets’.

The Reds’ apparent interest in the 26-year-old was brought to light in recent weeks, with claims emerging that Jurgen Klopp was prepared to spend big to land him in the summer.

Liverpool’s admiration of Carlos has since been backed up by a second source, too, with Goal now stating that he is among the players who are on the shortlist of targets at Anfield.

The report states that the Brazilian, who is interesting Real Madrid as a possible replacement for Sergio Ramos, has a release clause worth £64 million at Sevilla.

Carlos may only have arrived at Sevilla from Nantes in the summer transfer window, but it comes as no great surprise to see him being touted with some big clubs across Europe.

The defender has cemented his place in his team’s starting line-up, with 19 La Liga starts to his name already this season, and even netted a decisive goal as Sevilla beat Leganes 1-0 in December

Carlos would be a pricey addition for Liverpool if the Spanish club opt to hold out for the aforementioned figure of £64 million. Still, if reports are to be believed, the Reds are intent on pursuing him to strengthen their back-line.

Virgil van Dijk has been formidable since his £75 million move from Southampton, while Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip have provided Klopp with a selection headache with regards to the other starting berth in central defence.

Liverpool’s rearguard has been second to none this season – they have conceded only 14 Premier League goals, five less than Leicester City in second – but bolstering the ranks while on top is always a positive strategy.

Klopp and his men behind the scenes are clearly not resting on their laurels, and given the links to Carlos in recent times, it seems they are ready to elevate Liverpool’s defensive options to the next level.
