Chester 0-7 Liverpool: Quick Hit Notes

Throughout the entire 2018/19 campaign, I’ll be re-watching the entire 90 minutes of every single Liverpool game, which is something I’ve been doing for games over the past few seasons anyway.

As I re-watch, I take down some quick notes and, this year, I’ll be sharing those in article form here at Read Liverpool.

The Reds got their preparations for the 2018/19 season underway with a 7-0 victory over Chester FC at the Swansway Chester Stadium on Saturday.

Obviously, taking too much away from the first pre-season game of any summer is never too wise as the game was mainly a fitness exercise, but there were a few things I did take from the match:

  • Harry Wilson’s calmness and composure in front of goal is as good as I’ve ever seen in any Liverpool prospect. Both of his goals were reactionary but he seemed to have an age to put the ball into the back of the net. Sometimes you just see a player and think he has the goal scoring gift and I get that feeling with Wilson.

  •  Fabinho looked at home as the number six. Liverpool struggled to have somebody to up the tempo from that position when Jordan Henderson was not in the team, but Fabinho looked like he could keep things moving well.
  • Naby Keita just looks born to play for a Jurgen Klopp side. The tempo at which he plays is perfect for Liverpool. He was ferocious in the tackle and, when he had the ball, he was always looking to attack.

  •  This is nothing new but Daniel Sturridge is still a class act. He took his goals so well and some his touches around the penalty area were exquisite. His future likely lies away from Anfield but he is such a good player.
  • Divock Origi has a chance to get himself regular game time at Liverpool next season. He certainly has the attributes to be an effective player, and he showed them in the first half. His only issue was a lack of composure in front of goal, but in terms of positioning and his movement, he looked very sharp.
