Dalglish backs Gerrard to be Liverpool’s next manager – it’s too early to tell

Steven Gerrard will always be linked with becoming Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Liverpool, but he must get the job on merit.

The Reds legend is doing an impressive job as manager of Rangers, trying to bridge the gap between themselves and rivals Celtic.

Writing in the Sunday Post, Sir Kenny Dalglish talked up Gerrard replacing Klopp one day, picking him out as the obvious candidate:

The Liverpool manager stated that if he decides to call time on his career at Anfield a couple of years down the line, then Steven Gerrard would be his tip to take over from him.

It’s a hypothetical scenario, but one that I can see the sense in. I’m sure Jurgen is only echoing the thoughts of most of the club’s supporters.

However, let’s be clear. Jurgen is going nowhere, and nobody with the club at heart wants to see him depart.

It’s only logical that Gerrard is being pencilled in for the Liverpool job years down the line, not least by Klopp himself.

The Reds should only appoint him if he has genuine managerial pedigree at that point, however, not just because he enjoyed a legendary playing career at Anfield.

If not, it would be an appointment that had the potential to be undo all of Klopp’s wonderful work.

Gerrard is clearly doing a good job in Scotland, and deserves to be spoken of as a potential future Liverpool boss, but it certainly shouldn’t be a given.
