Liverpool have been handed a boost ahead of Arsenal’s visit to Anfield tomorrow with the news that club captain Granit Xhaka will not play for the Gunners following his explicit laden tirade in Sunday’s draw with Crystal Palace, as reported by Bleacher Report.
Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead before seeing Sokratis’s late effort controversially ruled out by VAR, in a game filled with spite and apathy from fans and players alike.
Xhaka, who was actually one of Arsenal’s better performers on the day, came in for a torrent of abuse after he was substituted and his ill-disciplined reaction to the fans’ taunts and jeers only further intensified the toxic atmosphere that was building inside the Emirates.
Emery has said that Xhaka must apologise for his actions, but is yet to comment on whether the Swiss international will be stripped of the armband.
Whilst Arsenal’s season was unfolding in front of them, Liverpool showed great resilience to maintain their grip on top spot with a 2-1 win over Tottenham – a result that sees them remain unbeaten.
It is yet to be seen whether Xhaka’s removal from the team will be a blessing or a curse for what is set to be a much-changed Liverpool team on Wednesday night but one thing is for sure, Arsenal’s lack leadership in a time of turmoil will be vulnerable should the Reds choose to take advantage.
