Fans bemused by Liverpool’s team to face Monterrey

Liverpool have named a reasonably strong starting XI as they begin their Club World Cup campaign.

They line up against the Mexican side this afternoon in a bid to make the final of the competition, where they’ll meet Brazilian giants Flamengo if they win.

The big news is that Virgil van Dijk misses out through illness, despite Klopp playing down his absence from training earlier in the week.

These Reds supporters on social media seemed quite concerned about the lack of depth at centre-back as Jordan Henderson fills in for the Dutchman on this occasion.

Liverpool appear keen to stress that Van Dijk only misses out through ‘illness’, which would suggest that it’s nothing too serious.

Some fans might have hoped to see a few more youngsters included too, but Klopp has made no secrets that the club are looking to win the competition.

It’s a strong team and one that should have enough quality to win the game.
