Fernando Torres has announced his retirement from football at the age of 35. The Spaniard has enjoyed a wonderful career, starting life at Atletico Madrid, where he captained the La Liga side at just 19.
His performances for his boyhood club earned him a big-money move to Liverpool in the summer of 2007, where he became one of the biggest signings of the Rafa Benitez era. Blossoming into arguably the world’s best strikers in the late 2000s, Torres ended up scoring 81 goals in 142 appearances.
He forged a stunning partnership with Steven Gerrard and quickly became one of the most popular foreign imports in Liverpool’s history. Torres did tarnish his reputation when he moved to Chelsea in January 2011, but as the years have passed, many supporters have forgiven his decision to leave Anfield. After a second stint at Atletico, he finished his career at Japanese J1 League side Sagan Tosu.
‘El Nino’ also won the 2010 World Cup with Spain, as well as Euro 2008, when he scored the only goal in the final against Germany. Torres scored 38 times for his country, earning 110 caps overall. It is a career that many players would envy and his best years were arguably spent in a Liverpool shirt, so we’ve decided to take a look at his career in pictures.
