Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has praised current Reds star Roberto Firmino, labelling the Brazilian ‘the key’ to the club’s success.
The Reds have enjoyed a fruitful start to the season, with Jurgen Klopp’s men occupying top spot in the Premier League table after maintaining a 100% winning record after six league games.
Firmino has scored and assisted two goals in the league so far, while also having scored the winner in a 3-2 thriller against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield in the Champions League.
As quoted by BBC Sport, Gerrard said:
Firmino is an absolute genius when you watch him close up.
He’s as interested in setting up a goal as scoring one.
While Gerrard was quick to acknowledge the importance of fellow Reds forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané in the club’s dynamic front three, he was keen to stress that:
The key is Firmino.
Gerrard also claimed that the current Liverpool line-up is the strongest he has seen in some time. He continued:
I look at Liverpool now and can’t find any weaknesses when they’re at full strength.
This is a lot stronger than the team I played in – it’s Liverpool’s best squad for a very long time.
The only thing they haven’t got going for them is the experience. As someone who went very close, we lacked that experience.
