Klopp confirms Mignolet will start against West Brom

Simon Mignolet will return to the Liverpool starting line-up this weekend when the club take on West Brom in the FA Cup Fourth Round.

The Belgian goalkeeper recently lost his first-choice status to German understudy Loris Karius, who played in the previously FA Cup round against Everton, with Karius now the Premier League ‘keeper for the foreseeable future.

Reds’ manager Jurgen Klopp wants both players to maintain “rhythm”, and so Mignolet is now expected to take the reigns as Liverpool’s cup ‘keeper.

Speaking earlier today, Klopp said;

Simon Mignolet will play. I don’t want to make it more confusing but I really think all goalkeepers need rhythm, training, match-time as well, so they all have the opportunity to play and keep rhythm.

In a situation when you need to change, you then have a goalkeeper who has played a few games.

Neither Mignolet nor Karius have been able to avoid criticism when selected this season, with neither ‘keeper able to establish themselves as the unquestionable No. 1.

The German coach is confident however that both are of sufficient quality and has suggested that he will continue to rely on the pair. He continued;

You can only do that if you have quality goalkeepers and in my opinion we can do it.
