Liverpool offered boost in pursuit of German midfielder

Liverpool and Arsenal have been offered a boost in their pursuit of Schalke midfielder Max Meyer, who is “exploring” his options this summer.

The 22-year old Germany international has established himself as a key player for the Bundesliga outfit since his debut in 2013, but he is now considering other options ahead of his contract expiring this summer.

Having already rejected a new deal with Schalke, a Premier League switch could well be on the cards.

Both the Reds and Arsenal are believed to have expressed a strong interest in Meyer. As a versatile player, Meyer could fill in for the seemingly outgoing Emre Can, or for the vacant spot left by Philippe Coutinho.

When asked about the recent transfer rumours concerning Meyer, Schalke’s sporting director Christian Heidel confirmed that the German was indeed looking at potential destinations for the summer. Talking to RevierSport, Heidel said;

It is clear that Max and his advisors are exploring the market.

And we’re not doing anything different.

Earlier this week, Heider had admitted that Schalke would welcome Meyer if he decided to sign a new deal with the club, but also suggested that the club wouldn’t wait around for him to do so. He told Sport Bild;

If Max Meyer comes now and says he wants to continue playing for Schalke that would be wonderful.

But we cannot and will not wait for a few more weeks.

Meyer has scored 22 goals in 189 appearances for Schalke, and would represent a smart signing for Liverpool, especially given the lack of transfer fee needed.
