Liverpool have been offered fresh hope in their pursuit of Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij.
The Dutch defender was heavily linked with Liverpool earlier this season, and a move looked unlikely after Virgil van Dijk’s recent big money move from Southampton went through.
However, with De Vrij out of contract in the summer, the Reds’ could look into completing a deal, with the Dutchman likely to cost a nominal fee in January.
The Reds’ could also look to sign the Netherlands international on a pre-contract deal, where the 25-year old would join for nothing in the summer.
Speaking ahead of Lazio’s weekend clash against SPAL, head coach Simone Inzaghi suggested that he expected De Vrij to leave Stadio Olimpico sooner rather than lately. He said;
De Vrij? I would love for him to renew his deal and stay here with us but this is still not sure yet.
We are focused on our game against SPAL.
The former Feyenoord man could be seen as the perfect player to challenge Joel Matip for a starting berth, and partner his compatriot Van Dijk in the heart of defence.
