Liverpool continued their unbeaten start to the campaign with a scrappy 2-1 win away at Southampton. Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino were the scorers for the Reds, while former Red Danny Ings pulled one back for the Saints late on.
In a first half where Jurgen Klopp’s men were clearly feeling the effects of the Wednesday game, Southampton pushed hard for an opening goal and came close twice.
However, Liverpool keeper Adrian, who was a major doubt for this game, pulled off two very good saves.
Then right at the end of the first half, Mane produced a moment of magic by cutting inside and rifling a shot away from Angus Gunn into the back of the net.
The game was effectively won in the 71st minute, when Mane won the ball higher up the field and freed up Firmino, who took three touches before sliding his effort into the net.
Southampton got a goal back when Adrian tried to be funky and got his pass intercepted by Ings, with the interception then being directed into the back of the net. However, that turned out to be a consolation as Liverpool saw the game out.
