On this very day in 2009, a rampant Liverpool side put their bitter rivals Manchester United to the sword in a quite staggering 4-1 victory away from home.
It was a big game, as the derby always is, for Rafa Benitez’s men and they came to United hungry for a big three points; they duly delivered and in ruthless fashion.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for the hosts and it was looking as though United were in cruise control for the rest of the match, but Fernando Torres pounced shortly after to level the scoring. Steven Gerrard then converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time to give the Reds an important lead heading into the interval.
From then onwards, it was all Liverpool and they simply ran riot against Sir Alex Ferguson’s men. Late second-half goals from Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena saw the visitors come away with a memorable 4-1 win.
