Matip reveals what he needs to do to improve

Joel Matip feels that he needs to be contributing more on the goalscoring front for Liverpool, something that he aims to improve for next season.

The Cameroon international has been competing with Dejan Lovren for a place in the starting 11 alongside record signing Virgil van Dijk this season.

Matip has made 21 Premier League appearances in the current campaign, including their previous match, a 5-0 victory over Watford, which came with a sixth clean sheet in the previous nine games. The 26-year-old has scored one goal this season, and that is where the problem lies for Matip.

Although being a defender, and having the duty to keep the goals out, he believes he should be contributing to the team down at the other end more often. Speaking to the club’s official website, Matip said;

I hope that a few more will follow as I am not happy with my goal return.

I am a defender, I know, but I think to myself that I could score more goals for Liverpool than I already did.

Maybe sometimes I need a little bit of luck, maybe sometimes I have to do something different when I go forward. I’m not desperate about it. I’m still positive and I hope my next goal is not too far away.

This isn’t such an unrealistic goal for the former Schalke defender, as he notched 23 times in all competitions for the Gelsenkirchen club, and has been reduced to just the two in his Liverpool career.
