Despite ending the campaign on a cruel note, Liverpool’s 2017-18 finished stronger than any season since 2013-14. Both seasons, the Reds finished runners-up of one kind or another, but there is something markedly different this time. As tragic as the loss in Kiev might have been, the future of Liverpool Football Club is bright.
With another top-four finish and preparations for the first back-to-back Champions League campaigns in nearly a decade, all indications show a club on the ascendancy, even operating ahead of schedule. Yet beyond those accomplishments, these Reds play some of the most exciting, swashbuckling football in the country.
This is a side that now strikes fear in every side it faces. Anfield is a stronghold and an enticing destination for the right kind of players once again. It might prove otherwise but it also seems that potentially the last of the talismanic wantaways has departed for the foreseeable future. The club is regaining its stature amongst football’s elite. In fact, World Cup or not, the start of the new season cannot come soon enough.
