A 3-0 England Under-21 victory over Kazakhstan came at the expense of Joe Gomez, who hobbled off with a knee injury with 10 minutes left on the clock.
A surprise addition to Liverpool’s starting XI early on in the season, Gomez impressed everyone with his defensive displays out of position and managed to push £12m man Alberto Moreno out of the picture.
Despite a few errors that lead to goals, people understood that these would be eradicated with age and experience and the 18-year-old became a fan favourite in no time at all.

The injury comes at a particularly unfortunate time, as the former Charlton Athletic man would have been looking to impress new manager Jurgen Klopp and force his way into the German’s plans.
The hunger to impress could also be found in Jordon Ibe, who started the match with Gomez and was replaced with 25 minutes to go.
Klopp’s penchant for playing youth could mean a potential Sakho-Gomez partnership in the near-future, with Lovren and Skrtel’s performances in a four-at-the-back system leaving a lot to be desired in recent weeks.
These are exciting times for Liverpool, and Joe Gomez will hope he won’t have to watch from the sidelines for long.
