Gomez reveals his thoughts on the Sterling incident

Joe Gomez has opened up about the incident involving Raheem Sterling back in November – one that left the Liverpool defender with a scratch to his face.

Gomez and Sterling squared up to one another during the Reds’ 3-1 win over Manchester City, before the incident spilled over on England duty.

The pair will reconvened again when the Three Lions meet up later this month.

Speaking to The Athletic, Gomez admits it was a difficult time, but says the situation with Sterling is sorted:

It was a difficult period. I enjoy football, it’s my passion, but there are a lot of things that come with it, like the limelight. That’s the thing that I didn’t enjoy.

If anything it has made me a bit more stand-offish. But in terms of the actual situation (with Sterling), what happened happened. We spoke. It was done. As a team it was done. So in my head it was done.

Gomez has been magnificent since the spat with his former Liverpool teammate, proving to be one of the Reds’ most consistent performers over the winter. Throughout December and January, he recorded a WhoScored match rating of 7 or above on seven different occasions.

His absence was felt against Watford on Saturday, with Jurgen Klopp’s men all at sea defensively during their 3-0 defeat at Vicarage Road.

The way in which Gomez has moved on from the incident highlights what a mature individual he is for someone who is just 22 years of age. It is sometimes easy to forget that he is still such a young player considering the poise and intelligence that he plays with.
