Naby Keita says he is “heartbroken” following the death of nine footballers in his homeland, following a tragic bus crash.
The Liverpool Echo had reported that Guinean’s cousin, Almamy Keita, was among those to have died in the accident, but those claims have been refuted by journalist Amadou Makadji on Twitter.
While Almamy was on board the bus, he wasn’t one of those to have passed away as Guinean side Etoile de Guinee made their way to play in the city of Kankan.
Liverpool star Keita took to Instagram to reveal his heartbreak at the news on Friday, saying:
I am shocked, sad and heartbroken at this terrible news.
I send my sincere condolences to all families of the victims, as well as the whole sporting family of Guinea.
Rest in perfect peace guys.
It remains to be seen if Keita will be involved against Bournemouth on Saturday, having not played since being substituted in the 3-2 win at home West Ham.
The 25-year-old has returned from a hip injury and is in line to feature at Anfield this weekend.
Liverpool will be looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats away to Watford and Chelsea, in the Premier League and FA Cup respectively.
Victory would take the Reds 25 points clear of Manchester City, for one day at least, and to within three wins of clinching the title.
