Henderson informed team mates of Rodgers news

When Brendan Rodgers was dismissed as Liverpool manager on Sunday by Fenway Sports Group, it was left to club captain Jordan Henderson to deliver the news to his team mates, Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail has revealed.

The 25-year-old – who hasn’t appeared for the Reds since being forced off with a heel injury against Bournemouth on August 17 – was informed of the Ulsterman’s dismissal by Mike Gordon via phone call following the 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby on Sunday.

The Mail also claim that the Liverpool players are keen on working with Jurgen Klopp, despite being upset that Rodgers has left.

Gordon, president of Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group, told Rodgers after the draw at Goodison Park that he would be relieved of his duties, though the Mail are reporting that the decision was actually made a week prior.

The sacking put an end to weeks of speculation, and it was the skipper who had the responsibility of telling his colleagues.

The Mail were told by a source: “It was always thought that the owners would wait until Christmas and if they were not in the top six then they would have a decision to make.

“The speculation would not go away but the timing – after a win and a draw – was interesting.

“Jordan was asked to deliver the news.

“There is sadness at the way it worked out with Brendan but an acceptance that it’s football and these things happen.

There is a belief that the new man can come in and provide an immediate impact.

Multiple reports, from sources such as the Telegraph, suggest that former Borussia Dortmund manager Klopp will be officially unveiled as Rodgers’ successor on Friday, by which point he will have signed a three-year deal.
