Heskey urges Liverpool to strengthen two positions in January

Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has urged the club to strengthen two more areas in January after securing the signing of RB Salzburg midfielder Takumi Minamino.

The Reds went into Christmas 10 points clear at the top of the league with a game in hand so major investment isn’t necessary, however, many would argue Jurgen Klopp’s squad lacks attacking quality in depth.

Heskey explained to the Liverpool Echo how, when compared to their main Premier League title rivals Manchester City, they aren’t as covered if a main attacking star was to get injured:

I think they’re pretty set for the rest of the season but they might need another striker and also a dynamic winger. If they were to lose Salah or Mane, they don’t really have that dynamic winger like they’re used to. If you look at City, they lose Sane, who is injured at the minute and they have Mahrez. If they lost him they’ve got (Bernardo) Silva so they always have someone as back up.

Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri provide the main back-up when needed, but it’s clear to see that Man City’s depth is superior.

Luckily for the Reds, injuries have been kind this season with Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino all being available for the vast majority.

If injuries were to strike though, it’d be worth having at least one top-class attacking option to come in.

Origi has flourished into a good option of the bench, but a club of Liverpool’s stature and success can aim for better in the transfer market.
