Claims made by Ryan Giggs about Liverpool are brilliantly coming back to haunt him.
In an interview with the Daily Mirror back in 2011, the Manchester United legend claimed his club would never fall away like Liverpool did, following the Reds’ period of dominance in the 1970s and 1980s:
Our manager is not always looking just for this season. He buys players with a view to the future, which he’s done more and more over the last few years.
The manager is experienced enough to know that we’ll be challenging for the league this season and long after that because of the nucleus of the squad we have, as well as adding fresh blood, which gives everyone a lift.
Liverpool are a big club but they’ve obviously had massive problems off the pitch. They’ve had a new manager this season and new owners, and they haven’t got off to the start they’d wished.
But they have got quality players in their team, and when you’ve got that, you’ve always got a chance. Losing is like winning, in that it can become a habit.
Once you start losing, the luck doesn’t seem to go for you. Whereas if you’re winning, it does seem to go for you.
With Liverpool now one of Europe’s best sides and United struggling ever since Alex Ferguson left in 2013, Reds supporters have been reacting to Giggs’ unearthed quotes on Twitter.

In fairness to Giggs, he couldn’t have predicted just how much Liverpool and United’s fortunes would change in the eight years that followed his interview.
Since Ferguson departed, United have been on a downward spiral that has often seen Champions League qualification as their biggest achievement.
On the flip side, Liverpool have been turned into a true powerhouse again under Jurgen Klopp, winning the Champions League last season and blowing away opponents week in, week out.
It feels like a long time ago now that Reds supporters were having to watch on in envy at their bitter rivals down the M62.
