How the festive period will be key to Liverpool’s chances of success

It remains very early days in the Premier League, but there is a lot to like about Liverpool’s fantastic start to the season.

While debate may rage regarding the effectiveness of Salah, Firmino and Mane so far this year, there are some suggestions that there is no cause for panic just yet. After all, the team is in good condition and genuinely looks to set to compete at a high level. The question now is just how far can they go?

Time for silverware

Last season was undoubtedly exciting, with both the emergence of Salah as a world-class force and the magical run to the Champions League final. However, for the many thrills and spills, there was one thing ultimately missing – silverware.

This is clearly something that Klopp wants to address this time around and bookmakers certainly seem to think his team are up for the challenge, as the majority have offered strong odds on a trophy returning to Anfield this season. With a number also promoting introductory offers, such as Coral’s free bet deal as revealed by Oddschecker, now could well be the time to back the boys in red. What is fuelling this change of attitude, though?

Frantic festive football

If one period is likely to be critical to Klopp’s efforts to win a trophy this year, it is undoubtedly the run of games from the start of December to January 1st. The festive football schedule is notoriously challenging and the final month of 2018 looks set to have a major bearing on Liverpool’s season.

The club starts the month with a home derby against Merseyside rivals, Everton, with a short but tough trip to Burnley a few days later. A trip to Bournemouth is then followed by a Champions League match with Napoli and then another massive home game – this time against Manchester United. A week later there is a trip to Wolves, then two further key matches at Anfield, against Newcastle and Arsenal. Finally, they head to the Etihad on 1st January to take on Manchester City. The schedule is jam-packed and none of these opponents should be taken lightly.

No time to breathe

While Liverpool have started well, a key test of their ability to secure silverware will be how they navigate challenges such as those posed by their schedule across Christmas and the New Year. It is a relentless period which sees them come up against their traditional rivals and also one of the sides most likely to push them for the title every step of the way.

It is going to be breathless, nervy and exciting – basically, everything that football fans live for.
