Jurgen Klopp calls for “special” Anfield night after PSG defeat

Jurgen Klopp still has faith in Liverpool qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages, despite losing to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.

The Reds’ 2-1 defeat at Parc des Princes means they must beat Napoli either 1-0 or by two clear goals on December 11, assuming PSG see off Red Star Belgrade.

It brings back memories of 2004/05, when a dramatic 3-1 win over Olympiakos saw Liverpool progress, before winning the competition five months later.

Speaking to reporters after the PSG loss, Klopp says a great Anfield night is required next month:

We need Anfield again, we need to create an atmosphere which is pretty special.

But Napoli is a really strong side and they played well here, they played against us really well – OK, we were not that good that night, but they played really good.

But it’s in 13 days, December 11, so we have a few other games before that. We have to make a special night of it, 100 per cent, if we want to go through.

If we do that and win it then we deserve it, if we don’t then we don’t deserve it, that’s how it is.

It was a poor night for Liverpool in Paris, who found themselves 2-0 down after 37 minutes and comprehensively outplayed.

Although James Milner’s penalty gave them hope, they never properly kicked on, losing their fourth away Champions League game in succession.

The Napoli match is sure to be another memorable occasion, but the Reds must improve drastically if they are to go through.
