Key trio return to Liverpool training ahead of Atalanta clash

Liverpool have been boosted by the news that Joel Matip, Kostas Tsimikas and Naby Keita are all back in training, ahead of the Reds’ Champions League clash with Atalanta.

Jurgen Klopp’s men make the trip to Italy on Tuesday night, looking to make it three wins out of three in Group D.

There are still a number of injury concerns for Liverpool, but Matip, Tsimikas and Keita look like they might be in the frame to feature prominently.

According to The Athletic’s James Pearce on Twitter, the trio all trained alongside their colleagues on Monday.

Matip’s return is arguably most important, with Rhys Williams potentially having to start alongside Joe Gomez, if the Cameroonian isn’t fit.

It is hugely encouraging to see all three back and raring to go, at a time when Klopp desperately needs key men returning.

I actually wouldn’t start any of them on Tuesday night, however, for a variety of reasons.

Matip needs to be wrapped in cotton wool ahead of Sunday’s crucial trip to Manchester City, with Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho both missing already.

Meanwhile, Tsimikas and Keita are likely to be off the pace after their respective absences, so throwing them in against a dangerous, high-octane Atalanta team would be a risk.

A substitutes’ role for the duo could be a shrewd move by Klopp, though, allowing them to come on when legs are tiring.
