The Reds were suffering somewhat of an injury crisis at centre-back and Henderson filled in alongside Joe Gomez as Liverpool made it through to the final of the Club World Cup.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official site, Klopp said this:
Against Monterrey, we had for the first time the situation where we had only one centre-half left and Hendo did an exceptional job there, the whole team did that. With Virgil Van Dijk, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip out at the time, Henderson stepped up and led the team to success as a centre-back. Whilst it was against inferior opposition in the grand scheme of things, Henderson did a solid job and was reliable at the back.
That being said, it is very unlikely that we will ever see Henderson deployed in that role in the Premier League. Van Dijk, Lovren and Matip are all back, with Fabinho – who has played centre-back – due to return next month. It is always nice to have the option though…
